The teacher comes when the student is ready

It is difficult to short circuit the process of learning because there are multiple stages of learning something. I find that it starts with a black letter knowledge – ie just reading and understanding the words of something – which moves to a deeper physical and experiential understanding that then later moves to a subconscious knowing of something that is so deep that it filters how we see the world. So, true learning takes time. It needs time to move from words in our brain to actual practice to the general framework of our mind.

Over the years, I have had many “teachers” and each has come with a different message that I felt I needed to expand my consciousness. Some teachings I have understood from their words alone but didn’t absorb to the next level at the time. So I have had to come back to them at a later time when it became apparent when that information is necessary.

Other teachings have hit me like a 4 tonne truck. Where the process of reading the teaching is accompanied instantaneously by adopting the experience of it and then it smoothly transitions to a way of seeing the world which I can never go back from.

An example of the former was when I first started learning about ‘money blocks’ and realising how my perceptions about money were wrong. It was a long process of confronting the day to day ideas I had about money and choosing to adopt a different view.

An example of the latter for me was seeing the non-dual truth of reality. Within a process of few days of reading and meditating, it became clear to me that what I was seeing was a glimpse of a deeper reality that has now provided me with a lifelong detachment from the immediate flow of my emotions. True I have to remind myself again and again of the truth but once you have felt the truth it is difficult to go back.

And that’s what good teachers do. They take your mind and expand the vessel so that more information can come in and fill the top.

Here is a brief list of teachers I have had across the years (in no particular order) whose teachings I have binged and whose ideas I can say have fundamentally changed how I see the world. There may be many teachers who have the same message as them but for me it is these individuals that I attribute as the owners of ideas that I have:
