The essence of almost all productivity and self-help books is the achievement of complex and grand desires by taking necessary action.
They can all be broken down into two steps:
- Get clear on what you want.
- Do things in pursuit of that.
All manifestation techniques, hustle culture, fitness culture, self development, law of attraction teachings, psychological techniques etc go to an aspect of these two steps – whether it is knowing why you want something, recognising the importance of taking actions, taking action with faith that the universe is with you. The role of a large part of self-development is to make you expansive enough internally for you to do what needs to be done in some way.
I am going to add a third aspect, which I have found less talked about:
3. Remember to do it and why you are doing it.
Sure, this is essentially what consistency is, which many fitness coach can you tell you the importance of. But what creates this consistency? I think there is some space to talk about how to build systems of consistency for desires beyond just fitness. How do you build consistency? For me, it comes from remembering the why of goals. Doubt inherently creeps in and its important to remember why you are doing something. Usually that involves writing down the why so I can come to it again and again.
